Luego de coronarse en una de las tres grandes carreras de ciclismo en territorio europeo, el joven nacido en Zipaquirá habló por primera vez sobre la crisis social que atraviesa Colombia hace más de un mes.
Desde allí expuso que: «Apoyo a la gente que marcha, pero no apoyo la violencia de ninguna parte… durante la carrera solo pensaba en que este triunfo fuera una alegría en este momento y que nos uniera».
Es importante recordar que unos cuantos días antes de que iniciara la carrera, el deportista había manifestado su preocupación por los actos de fuerza desmedida que se presentaron en las manifestaciones de diferentes ciudades, además, aclaró que rechazaba “los abusos de las autoridades hacia las personas que salen a protestar”.
Para concluir, Bernal hizo una sentida reflexión: «Empecemos por nosotros mismos, antes de esperar que otra persona cambie el país pues, parce, empecemos por nosotros. Esto no va a ser algo de la noche a la mañana. Nosotros sí podemos cambiar».
