Luego de su renuncia al partido de la U, a Benedetti se le ha visto más tranquilo y libre al dar sus declaraciones en el Congreso y ante la prensa en Colombia, todo esto teniendo en cuenta que al parlamentario siempre se le ha conocido por su espontaneidad.
En el debate que se dio en la cámara alta este jueves contra Carlos Holmes Trujillo, el senador advirtió que él no es petrista, pero que con los argumentos que sus colegas y el propio ministro estaban presentando, Petro les ganará las próximas elecciones presidenciales.
«Yo no soy petrista propiamente, pero les va a ganar Petro; a todos los que están sentados aquí, les va a ganar Petro después de oírlo hablar», dijo el parlamentario durante su intervención en la plenaria.
Benedetti, también se fue en contra de los senadores del partido de Gobierno, allí dijo que sus argumentos eran comunes. «Ministro, mándalos al carajo, como dijo (Ernesto) Macías. Tú no necesitas quien te defienda, y si te van a defender, pídeles que no voten por ti, pero que se queden callados»
«Lo que ha pasado hoy es vergonzoso. Una cantidad de halagos. Nunca han ido al Cauca, no saben cuántos indígenas matan, no saben cuántas masacres», dijo el senador.
