El Consejo Nacional Electoral tomó la decisión de abrir una indagación preliminar en contra del presidente Iván Duque, por una presunta infracción en la financiación de su campaña.
Esta se tomó con base en la solicitud que hizo el magistrado del CNE, Luis Guillermo Pérez, y el representante a la Cámara Fabián Díaz, quienes consideraron que se debía investigar la financiación de dicha campaña por unas recientes declaraciones.

El magistrado y el congresista hacen referencia a la declaración que entregó a la Corte Suprema de Justicia Aída Merlano, quien dijo que hubo compra de votos en la campaña de Iván Duque.
Es importante recordar que según las declaraciones de Merlano, Duque habría recibido una cifra cercana a los 6 mil millones de pesos por parte de Julio Gerlein.
Por otro lado, en sus declaraciones Merlano nombró al polémico clan Char que tiene varias investigaciones por fraude electoral en el departamento del Atlántico.
