Sin duda alguna el 13 de noviembre de 1985 es una fecha que quedó en la memoria de millones de colombianos, aquel día el Nevado del Ruíz hizo erupción provocando la dolorosa e inolvidable tragedia del municipio de Armero que dejó más de 23 mil victimas.
Treinta y cinco años después, en la memoria de miles de ciudadanos permanece que Iván Duque Escobar, el papá del actual presidente de Colombia, era ministro de Minas, un cargo que ejerció entre 1985 y 1986.
Se dice que diferentes profesionales como científicos, vulcanólogos y distintas autoridades le advirtieron a Duque Escobar del riesgo inminente de la erupción del Ruíz y sus consecuencias sobre la población, pero él subestimó las alarmas.
«El ministro Duque Escobar me dijo simple y llanamente que yo era ‘apocalíptico’ y ‘dramático’ por decir que podía ocurrir una tragedia. Posteriormente, días antes de la avalancha, yo tuve oportunidad de solicitarle al ministro que pusiera unas alarmas, él me contestó que eran exageradamente costosas porque valían alrededor de US$ 2.000. Yo le sugerí que vendiera algunos de los automóviles del ministerio, pero lo tomó como un buen chiste o un llamado de atención que le estaba haciendo, y las cosas no fueron atendidas hasta que se produjo la catástrofe», aseguró Hernando Arango Monedero, exrepresentante a la Cámara por el departamento de Caldas.
