“Reitero América Latina debe ser un espacio sin presos políticos y sin presos sociales. Toda violación a los derechos humanos debe ser condenada por toda la comunidad internacional. Mi solidaridad con los 94 nicaragüenses que fueron despojados de su nacionalidad”, trinó el mandatario.
Esto, en relación a la decisión que tomó el presidente Daniel Ortega de liberar a algunos presos políticos a cambio del destierro, quitándoles su nacionalidad.

Frente a esta determinación del Congreso peruano, en medio de la crisis que vive ese país, Petro ha recibido el respaldo de varias personas de la comunidad latinoamericana.
Incluso varios parlamentarios del Perú defendieron la labor de Gustavo Petro en defensa de los pueblos y sus derechos.
