La agencia AP, señala que un funcionario de un muy alto nivel dentro del Departamento de Defensa de Estados Unidos tenía sospechas en 2004 de que el entonces presidente de Colombia Álvaro Uribe “tenía un historial de tratos con paramilitares, según un informe desclasificado de sus primeros años en el ejecutivo”
La agencia también informó que el documento desclasificado hace parte de una serie de documentos y registros que fueron compartidos por una organización sin ánimo de lucro llamada National Security Archive (Archivo Nacional de Seguridad).
El funcionario del gobierno de Estados Unidos es Peter Rodman, quien ocupaba el cargo de secretario de defensa durante la presidencia de George W. Bush, Rodman escribió: “Casi con toda seguridad, Uribe tuvo vínculos con los paramilitares (AUC) cuando era gobernador de ese departamento”
La agencia también señala que “Decenas de legisladores. Incluyendo números aliados de Uribe, han sido encarcelados y condenados por vínculos con paramilitares, lo que establece una clara conexión entre la política y los grupos armados ilegales”
La revista Newsweek publicó en 2004 otro documento desclasificado en el que un informe de inteligencia de 1991 indica que Álvaro Uribe había sido colaborador del Cartel de Medellín y que adicional a eso, era amigo personal de Pablo Escobar. El diario estadounidense The New York Times también realizó una nota exclusiva al respecto.
